McHugh Questions FERC Chairman On Irresponsible Statement Regarding Nuclear Energy

Congressman John M. McHugh (R-NY-Pierrepont Manor) sent a letter today to the Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), responding to his comments in the New York Times that the United States may not need to build any more nuclear energy reactors. Congressman McHugh is a strong supporter of nuclear energy as a clean and safe source of reliable power. The 23rd Congressional District is home to three of New York's six nuclear power reactors. Nine Mile Point Units 1 and 2 and the James A. FitzPatrick contribute over 1500 well-paying jobs to our region. An application for the construction of a fourth facility, Nine Mile Point 3, is currently under consideration by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

"I firmly believe that nuclear energy is a critical part of a well-balanced energy portfolio in the United States. We have seen the benefits of nuclear energy right here in Oswego County through good jobs, reliable power, and a significant economic impact. Therefore, I find it extremely disturbing that the Chairman of FERC would make a statement that the United States ‘may not need any' more nuclear reactors," said Congressman McHugh. "It is distressing to me that the FERC Chairman would summarily take off the table America's largest source of 24/7 electricity that emits no greenhouse gases. Instead, I would strongly encourage the FERC Chairman to look at nuclear energy as one of the cornerstones of a 21st Century clean American energy policy."
